Awareness Creation Workshop on ICT for Community Development in Mekele & Axum, Tigrai
Awareness Creation Workshop on ICT for Community Development has been held in two cities of Tigrai Regional State, Mekele & Axum cities on November 5th & 6th, 2007 and November 9th & 10th, 2007 respectively. The two days workshop in each cities was organized jointly by Information & Communication Technology Assisted Development (ICTAD) Project and Tigrai Bureau of Capacity Building; and was attended by around 350 participants that constitute civil servants from 46 Woredas of the region, Women Association, Youth Association, Peasant Association, Private ICT firms, Cooperatives, People With Disabilities (PWD), Zone & Woreda Administrators, ICT Department, Public Relations Department and other staffs of the Tigrai Bureau of Capacity Building.
Ato Mekonnen, Head of the ICT Department, delivered a warm welcoming message by acknowledging the determination, which the ICTAD Project representatives showed to deliver the ICT Awareness Creation Workshop on Community Based Information by traveling all the way from Addis Ababa to Tigrai. Ato Ayanaw, representative of the ICTAD Project, followed by introducing the major ICT activities in Ethiopia and gave us highlights of the ICTAD Project.
Ato Ayanaw highlighted “The ICTAD Project assists Ethiopian communities to improve their livelihood through the use of appropriate Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) that facilitate increased access to markets, development information as well as public and private services.” He also discussed about the major areas of assistance which include:
- Creating an enabling policy and a legal and regulatory framework for the growth of the Ethiopian ICT sector;
- Increasing connectivity and providing access to communication services throughout the country;
- Strengthening the institutional capacity of regulatory, advocacy and key policy making institutions;
- Establishing locally adapted ICT industry standards and data security policies;
- Fostering opportunities for women and youth as well as small and medium enterprises in the ICT sector;
- Facilitating access to markets and market information for rural and urban communities.
In the afternoon, Ato Mekonnen reported the major ICT activities that are accomplished in the region so far. Next, Ato Dawit, coordinator of the ICTAD Project presented the format how to write successful proposal. In his presentation he discussed the major components which should be taken into consideration when writing a successful project. (i.e. Project Title, Region, Town, Kebele, Name & Address of the Contact Person, Name & Address of the Community, Start Date, Total Cost, Summary, Problem Identification/Background Identification, Objectives, Beneficiaries, Details about the Organization or Community and its role to solve the objectives, Contribution of the Community, Sustainability, Monitoring and Evaluation, and Budget. Later, a documentary film which depicts ICT contributions in the development area was displayed.)

The next morning was dedicated to group discussions on development of ideal projects - centered on improving the community’s life with the assistance of ICT. Finally, the projects were evaluated.
